Your trip starts at Islands Brygge, a former harbor district that is now one of Copenhagen’s most popular areas, with a harbor bath and green spaces. From here, cruise toward the city’s historic center.
BLOX, designed by OMA, houses the Danish Architecture Center, exhibitions, a shop, offices and homes. Nearby, the Prince’s Palace is home to the National Museum, Denmark’s largest museum of cultural history, with collections spanning the Viking Age to the present.
Christiansborg houses Parliament, the Supreme Court and the Prime Minister’s Office. A castle has stood here since 1167; this is the third. Pass Børsen, Christian IV’s 17th-century stock exchange, known for its spire of four intertwined dragon tails. It was damaged by fire in April 2024.
The pedestrian and bicycle bridge between Nyhavn and Christianshavn opens in two halves that meet in the middle, giving it its nickname. Cruise past Nyhavn’s colorful houses and old wooden ships without entering the harbor itself. The houses date back to the 17th century.
The Royal Danish Theatre’s playhouse opened in 2008 and stands right on the waterfront. In front is Ofelia Plads, a popular place to sit and enjoy views across the harbor.
Copenhagen’s Opera House on Holmen opened in 2005, a gift from the A.P. Møller and Chastine Mc-Kinney Møller Foundation. From the water, see Amalienborg, the royal family’s residence since 1794, the fountain in Amaliehaven and the Marble Church’s distinctive dome.
Christian IV built this Dutch-inspired canal in the 17th century: “Little Amsterdam”. Houseboats, canal houses and waterfront life fill the area most of the year. See the church’s gilded spiral staircase and Olafur Eliasson’s Circle Bridge, with five round platforms inspired by ships’ masts.
The Royal Danish Library’s striking extension in black granite and glass stands right on the waterfront. It opened in 1999 and is now one of Copenhagen’s best-known landmarks.
On your way back, cruise beneath Lille Langebro, which opened in 2019, and the larger Langebro before finishing your trip at Islands Brygge.
