Discover a hidden world beneath the harbor’s surface

Learn about the biodiversity of Copenhagen Harbour in a stylish electric GoBoat cruise boat. The tour lasts two hours, during which you’ll observe underwater harbor life, listen to the sounds of the harbour, and measure the water quality yourself – almost like being a marine biologist.

Tour price: DKK 3,799 (incl. VAT)

4 stops with activities

Space for 9 people per boat

You’ll get answers to the above questions as you, together with a professional captain, explore Copenhagen Harbour. The experience has been developed in collaboration with WWF Verdensnaturfonden and By & Havn. We donate one-third of the tour price to WWF’s work for nature. Drinks and snacks can be purchased from GoBoat when you book.

Working together for the ocean in the harbor

The multi-year partnership between By & Havn and WWF Verdensnaturfonden aims to create more habitats for fish in the harbour and support biodiversity in Copenhagen Harbor.

GoBoat invites you to experience some of the nature-enhancing projects from WWF Verdensnaturfonden and By & Havn on our biodiversity cruise. Use underwater viewers to observe fish nurseries and hydrophones to listen to life returning to the harbour. The tour gives you a unique chance to get up close to concrete restoration projects and learn how they positively impact life beneath the surface.

As part of the tour, you will be equipped with nets to collect litter in the harbor, helping to keep the water clean. You also help make a difference for nature simply by booking the tour, as one-third of the price goes directly to supporting WWF Verdensnaturfonden’s work for nature.

The Bio Explorer Cruise starts at Islands Brygge.

Just 30 years ago, the harbor was heavily polluted, but thanks to major efforts in wastewater treatment, it now has some of the cleanest harbour water in the world. Beneath the surface, however, lies a unique ecosystem that needs protection. We start at Islands Brygge, where we set the context for the challenges and solutions we will be exploring.

1. Observe fish in fish kindergartens

At the IDA building, we observe fish in the fish nurseries (biohuts) using an underwater viewer and learn how biohuts support biodiversity in Copenhagen Harbour. Don’t worry—the fish don’t mind us watching.

2. Fishing for litter

At Gammel Strand, we collect plastic and waste so that we can make a difference together. Beneath the surface lie incredibly important seagrass meadows, which act as natural hiding places for fish. They also help clean the water and absorb CO₂.

3. What do fish and noise pollution sound like?

At the Harbor Promenade we use a hydrophone to listen to the “language” of fish and the sounds of the harbour. Harbour animals use sound to communicate, hunt, and navigate. We also gain insight into how noise pollution affects the aquatic ecosystem.

4. We test the visibility of the water

Behind the Opera House, we measure water clarity using a so-called Secchi disk. Water clarity is an indicator of how healthy the ecosystem is. A low reading can signal nutrient pollution and algae growth, which is a major issue in Danish waters.

Practical information for the Bio Explorer Cruise

When you go on the Bio Cruise, you book a whole electric boat with space for 9 people—plus the captain, who both sails the boat and guides you. You book online and should arrive about 5–10 minutes before departure at Islands Brygge. If you are more than 9 people, you simply book two boats.

Bringing your own food and drinks is not allowed. However, you can add them to your trip from GoBoat’s shop. All equipment for the tour is included in the price. We strongly recommend wearing warm clothing for the trip.

When you book, you should reserve a GoBoat Cruise starting and ending at Islands Brygge for 2 hours. Then add 1× Bio Explorer Cruise to the trip per boat. You simply pay by card, and everything is ready. If you have any questions, you can contact us here.
